improv life: homemade valentines for boys embarrassed by valentines
Classmate valentines and fifth-grade boys can be a volatile mix. Pretty much anything you can find in the store will be deemed humiliatingly babyish or horrifyingly mushy. Ditto anything sweet and homemade. And definitely NO HEARTS. Still, a guy doesn’t really want to sit out the whole Valentine’s thing, either. I mean, there’s usually treats involved, right? For a solution, we turned to our beloved computer. It took about 10 minutes to find a photo of our dog, roughly silhouette it with our photo-editing software, add text and a red background, and print it. We stapled on some mini bags of candy, and we were V-day ready. The cards were a hit, and more importantly, NOT embarrassing.
So do you have a boy in the house who is a little shy about giving valentines or even gifts in general? I’d love to hear any thoughts or ideas!

This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing it–my son and I couldn’t figure out it, but now we know–pets are always cool!
Love this idea. My girls arent into mushy so I just might try it. If I do I’ll definitely put you as the source of our inspiration
Hooray for non-mushy girls–and thanks, testiny!
Those are so fun! My boys aren’t quite old enough to be embarrassed about Valentines just yet…but I’m sure it’s coming! We’ll have to try something manly like this soon I’m sure:)
Thanks, Kelli! You can bet they’ll change, but don’t worry–every stage is pretty wonderful!
